Why GPSs don’t show military bases and infrastructure

justicealliance, October 8, 2023January 23, 2024
  1. National Security Concerns: To ensure the safety and security of a country’s defense operations, military bases and other sensitive installations might be obscured or left out of publicly available maps. This helps prevent potential adversaries from easily obtaining detailed layouts of such facilities.
  2. Government Requests: Governments can request map service providers, like Google Maps, Apple Maps, or others, to blur or exclude certain areas from their databases. This is often done for sensitive sites beyond just military bases, like nuclear facilities or key infrastructure.
  3. Treaties and International Agreements: Some international agreements may restrict the display of certain types of military installations or facilities on publicly available maps.
  4. Protection Against Terrorism: In a post-9/11 world, there is a heightened awareness of the risks of terrorist attacks. Not revealing detailed layouts of military bases can be a precaution against potential threats.
  5. Accuracy and Updates: In some cases, while the military base itself might not be hidden, the details and internal structures could be outdated or not accurate. This is because satellite images used by mapping applications are not always up-to-date, and certain areas may not be updated as frequently.
  6. Publicly Available vs. Military-Grade Systems: It’s worth noting that while civilian GPS and mapping applications might not show detailed military base layouts, the military itself uses specialized GPS and mapping tools with much more detailed and classified information.why Gps don’t show military bases
